CBT

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence based type of talking therapy that involves understanding our feelings (emotional and physical), our thought processes, and our behavioural patterns. Through a better understanding of these elements we can start to understand why we might get stuck in cycles of feeling down and anxious or of overthinking. This may involve exploring past experiences and the development of belief systems that can influence our daily thought processes and behavioural patterns. CBT is an "active" therapy, in that it encourages you to try out new skills and provides you with more tools to cope with difficult feelings.

I integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) into my practice, having completed additional training in this area. This allows me to offer a more holistic approach to therapy. ACT is a modern, evidence-based approach, that helps people develop psychological flexibility - the ability to accept difficult thoughts and emotions, whilst still taking meaningful action in their lives.

Treatment usually consists of an assessment session, this is an opportunity for us to explore your current challenges, background, and goals in a supportive and non-judgmental space. This session allows me to understand your unique experiences and determine how we can tailor therapy to best support you.

The NICE Guidance for CBT recommends on average 12-16 sessions of CBT, depending on presenting difficulties. I would recommend starting with up to 6 sessions, as a starting point and then reviewing.

Sessions are usually held weekly or fortnightly and last for 50 minutes. If you would like to find out more about how CBT can help, please do fill in the contact form.

There are many types of therapy and if I feel that CBT is not the most appropriate fit for your presenting difficulties and therapy goals, I would discuss this with you. It’s important that each individual is accessing the type of treatment that is most appropriate for them.
